Governance at Swaffham Infant and Nursery School – 2017 - 2018
As governors we are responsible for:
1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
2. Holding the Head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;
3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
This means Governors lead the school, we don’t manage it.
We are here to give a long-term strategic direction for how the school is run and to ensure the school is accountable for its actions.
We are responsible for making sure the school provides a good quality education.
Raising educational standards in school is a key priority.
Governors are at the heart of how the school operates.
It is important we get things right.
How we do our job affects the interests of pupils, staff morale and how the school is seen by parents and others in the community.
The everyday priorities of the school change from year to year but the long-term focus does not.
The Governing Board makes sure that the school has high expectations of both pupils and staff.
It develops good relationships with all areas of the school, challenges complacency and provides a practical policy framework within which the school can operate.
Governors also promote effective ways of teaching and learning when setting the school aims and policies.
We do this together with the Head teacher, who is responsible for the day to day management of the school.
The Governors support and challenge the Head teacher by gathering views, asking questions and working with her to decide what's best for the school.
The Governing Board has a very important and essential role to play.
Governors are ultimately responsible for how the school is performing. It is, therefore, essential that we know the school well.
We work closely with the Head teacher and the whole Leadership Team in identifying the key issues for the future success of the school and its pupils
Being a School Governor is demanding but it is also rewarding and a good way of giving something back to the school and the local community.
Constitution of the Governing Board
The Governing Board consists of:
2 Parent Governors
1 Local Authority Governor
2 Staff Governors
4 Co-opted Governors
2 Foundation Governors representing the Church
Total number of Governors 11
At this present time we have a full governing body
At our Full Governors meeting in December after to talking to the head teacher we decided to review and change our meeting structure.
When we low in numbers to make sure we were quorate at every meeting we decided to make every meeting a Full Governing Body meeting so we stopped the Resources and Learning and Outcomes committees incorporating their work into the Full Governing Body meeting.
Now we have a full quota of governors after the recruitment of a new Parent Governor in October, we decided to make us even more efficient and effective as a governing body we would go back to having Resources and Learning and Outcomes committees.
So we will have
4 Full Governing Body,
3 Resources Committees
3 Learning and Outcomes Committee meetings per school year.
The committees will report back to the Full Governing Body
The Resources Committee, will focus on finance, premises and some personnel matters;
The Learning and Outcomes Committee will focus on curriculum, data and standards,
We also have committees that meet when necessary to consider staff pay and HTPM
We act within a framework set by national legislation and the policies of the Local Authority and in accordance with our Code of Practice.
